Spring on the farm

After a tree-mendous harvest and busy festive period welcoming both old and new customers and friends, we had a short but very sweet break. The team is now back working hard to nurture and cultivate future crops. Although blessed with a reasonably mild winter, the start of this year has been extremely wet. The waterproofs have been a permanent fixture. The rain however, has not dampened spirits or prevented us from working hard on the trees. The majority of this work is done by hand and the plantations are easily accessed on foot. At this time of year a lot of time is spent hand crafting the trees into that perfect Christmas tree shape. Side pruning the branches of our Nordman Fir with secateurs and using sheers to shape our Fraser Fir and Norway Spruce.

Sustainability is key for our business as well as for the environment. For every tree we harvest we plant at least 2 more. To enable this we have recently cleared two of our oldest plantations.   This is a task that cannot be done by hand, so we bring in the “beast”. A tractor with the mulcher attached (videos can be seen on both our Instagram/Facebook pages). Now the fields are clear, drainage work is carried out to prepare the best conditions for both spring and autumn planting.

Now the weather has started to improve and the daylight is staying longer the enthusiasm here is buoyant. In this extraordinary time we feel extremely lucky that our farm can continue to function. We have instigated strict social distancing and hygiene measures to keep our team safe. We are thankful that we are able to carry on trying to keep some structure of normality in these unprecedented times.
